Local farmers continue to be upbeat about the way crops are looking so far this year. Kevin Peters of HerbSigWil Farms says their fields look very nice in all areas from Randolph south to Zhoda but they will need continued timely rains. He adds they currently doing weed control and checking for pests.

"June now is our crunch time for keeping the weeds under control. There is definitely some flea beetle action in the fields but nothing beyond our threshold. We haven't done any spraying for insects at all."

Peters notes their soybeans are yellowing a bit from iron chlorosis deficiency, a stage they go through for a few weeks, but adds it's nothing to worry about. He says canola should soon start to flower.

"Canola is bolting and there will be some flowers in the next week or so. I imagine some of the earlier stuff will start seeing some flowers."

Peters says, ideally when canola is in flower, temperatures would stay in the lower twenties for optimum results.
