Centre Street South in Mitchell will be under construction beginning this week. Crews will be reconstructing that road from Highway 52 down to McKenzie Avenue.

Rob Driedger is Manager of Engineering and Utilities for the Rural Municipality of Hanover. He says the construction signs will go up Monday, surveying should happen Tuesday and then excavation will hopefully commence on Wednesday.

"Over the years the road has deteriorated to a point where it needed a reconstruction," says Driedger. "The main area that is getting a reconstruction was never built to standards that we see today and due to high traffic levels it was a priority for the town."

The work is expected to cost about $475,000 and Driedger says it should take about two weeks to complete. An asphalt overlay will be spread over the top of that entire stretch.

During construction, there will be stretches that are impassable to motorists. Driedger says when crews are doing the full excavation, they will allow local traffic, but it will probably be only through one access. Local residents will have an exit but may need to use an alternate route.

"There will be some temporary interruptions for sure," he says.

Driedger asks for patience from the public, noting the more room given to construction crews, the quicker the work can proceed.
