A fire broke out in the basement of a home on Beaverbrook Drive in the Deerfield area of Steinbach around 9:22 Tuesday evening.

Steinbach Fire chief Kel Toews says when crews arrived there was smoke coming out of the home.

"We sent crews in, found a fire in the basement, and extinguished it. In a call like this, we call out the Office of the Fire Commissioner, they come out and do an investigation."

Toews says until they hear the final results from the Office of the Fire Commissioner's findings, there will not be a determined or known cause.

He notes there was a lot of smoke damage in the basement of the home and some on the main level as well.

After crews extinguished the fire, they also rescued a cat from the home.

RCMP says they are continuing to investigate the incident at this time.
