A number of animals perished in the barn fire east of St. Pierre Wednesday evening.

The St. Pierre Fire Department was called to the barn fire just after 8 p.m. Approximately two miles east of St. Pierre on La Fourche Road.

Initial reports from the fire suggested the barn may have been vacant but we have been informed that the barn was being used for livestock. Fire Captain Rene Frechette says it is always devastating when an owner loses animals.

"There's probably over $40,000-$50,000 inside including content. There was a quad and a little bit of machinery and lots of chickens and a couple of sheep and a couple goats, they've lost some animals. It's always pretty devastating for someone who keeps livestock to lose their animals."

Frechette says by the time the fire department arrive at the barn, the north-east corner was engulfed in flames. He notes most of the barn was lost in the fire.
