Season seven is officially over.

The Steinbach Regional Secondary School football team celebrated it's 2016 championship season Tuesday night at the SRSS.

Over 200 coaches, players, parents, alumni, sponsors and guests of the football team attended the Sabres banquet.

"It's always a great opportunity to send the boys off and it's a break for the program," said head coach Jamie Peters. "We highlight some of the successes we had and hand out the awards. We send the graduating players off with a little something and a thank you. It's nice to see some alumni trickle in and it's a really good night."

The Sabres won their second Winnipeg High School Football League championship banner thanks to a 16-0 victory over the Kelvin Clippers in the final of the CTV Bowl.

"My whole big thing has always been just competing and trying to develop quality young men while playing competitive football games," said coach Peters prior to the banquet. "We've been fortunate enough to pile up a bunch of wins here the last couple of years and make it to four finals in seven years. That is pretty outstanding when you look at it. It's too bad we don't have three or four championships but two out of four isn't bad."

"It's just a matter of competing each and every game and giving these boys an opportunity to play and giving them something to look forward to outside of school. It's been a huge impact on the students in our school and I'm just happy that the football program has been a place for some of these kids to find."

Peters and his coaching staff will find out in spring if they will stay in the Kas Vidruk "AA" Division or move up to the John Potter "AAA" Division in 2017.
