The Steinbach Pistons winning streak came to an end on Wednesday as they fell in a shootout to the Neepawa Natives on home ice 3-2.

In the first half of the first period, Steinbach had a couple of power play opportunities but Neepawa was able to clog the lanes and block a number of shots. The best chance came on a Max Neil deflection that hit off the cross bar and stayed out.

Later in the period, the Pistons cut a path to the penalty box and were put down two men. Nik Anderson was called on to make a number of terrific saves including one off a puck that hit the glass behind him and popped right out in front. The 20-year-old stretched across and made a sensational pad save.

Anderson wasn't done as with the final seconds of the period ticking away, a miscommunication between Pistons defenders allowed a two on none break but Anderson again stood tall making a glove arm save in tight to keep things scoreless after the first twenty minutes.

In the second period, after a Pistons icing tapped a tired group out for a defensive zone face off, the Natives took advantage as they won the draw and a point shot with traffic in front found the back of the net to give Neepawa a 1-0 lead.

Steinbach cranked it up as the period went on but the Natives held strong taking that 1-0 lead into the second intermission.

Kyle Bettens continued his hot streak as he evened up the game after converting on a breakaway for his 5th of the year. The 1-1 goal was assisted by Ty Naakens who sprung Bettens and Carter Loney.

Neepawa answered back quickly to regain the lead 2-1 but Bettens again showed off his elite hands by knocking down a pass from the Natives zone and using his reach to get around the Neepawa goalie to bury his second of the game and tie things up 2-2.

Both teams had some chances, the majority of which belonged to Steinbach but the game needed overtimes.

Steinbach started the extra frame down a man that carried over from a late third period penalty. They were able to kill it off and thanks to another big save by Anderson, the Pistons and Natives would decide the game in a shootout.

It took six rounds in the shootout before Neepawa was able to score. Ty Naaykens scored to keep the shootout going but only for one more round as Neepawa stole the extra point with a shootout win.

Shots on goal were 37-29 in favor of Steinbach. Pistons power play was 0-4 while the penalty kill was huge killing a 5 on 3 and then another penalty in overtime.

Steinbach will travel to Portage on Friday night. That game will be available on MIX 96 and SteinbachOnline.com with the pre-game show at 7:15 pm and puck drop 7:30 pm.
