We've seen a rollercoaster of winter conditions in the last week and half and the Steinbach RCMP are encouraging drivers to be safe.

Constable Dennis Redekop says this includes scraping your windows. He notes motorists can be fined under the Highway Traffic Act for driving with an obstructed view.

“You have to have a clear view in front of you and beside you as well so there are no blind spots when you are driving. We do pull people over [for this]. Obviously, it is a huge safety concern because if you don't have a clear view, it’s a danger to others around you that are on the road as well so we do try our best to identify people and pull them over."

Redekop says we also need to change our driving habits in winter to match the conditions.

“Keep more distance between vehicles because if there is ice or snow on the road or rain, that creates a longer braking distance for vehicles, especially on ice. Speed limits are designed for perfect weather conditions. If there is ice or a blizzard, people can get fined for going the speed limit in a dangerous weather situation. Cruise control is also for ideal conditions.”

Finally, Redekop says winter tires are more than recommended as they provide significantly more traction in the winter months.
