An Extreme Cold Warning is now in effect for the entire province of Manitoba.

Environment Canada says extreme wind chill values in the -40 to -45 degree range are expected tonight through all of southern Manitoba as a bitterly cold arctic airmass settles over the region.

Environment Canada says extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors and those without proper shelter.

Watch for cold-related symptoms, including shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.

Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant. In these temperatures, frostbite can occur within minutes.

Also, if it is too cold for you to stay outside, it is too cold for your pet to stay outside.

The cold weather is expected to continue until the weekend. A warming trend will bring temperatures to near seasonal values by Sunday.
