There has been no dramatic increase in water use in Steinbach despite the very dry conditions so far this spring. Mike Heppner, head of the Waterworks Department, says the highest daily usage in the last couple of weeks occurred this past Monday at just under 5.7 million litres. He notes that is very average and well below the water system's daily processing capability of 7.8 million litres.

Heppner says, if needed, they also have the capability to increase production to 9 million litres or 2 million gallons per day. He doesn't anticipate any supply problems this spring as long as people continue to be conscientious about water use and conserve it where they can.

The highest water consumption day last year happened on September 20th at just under 8.8 million litres.

The city is currently building a second water supply system and treatment facility at a cost of 11 million dollars which will add significantly more capacity to the system.
