Newly paved pathway along Highway #12

The City of Steinbach has spent 60 thousand dollars to repave part of the walking/cycling path along Highway #12.

Randy Reimer, head of Public Works, says a contractor has put down 2 inches of fresh asphalt on the path along Highway #12 from Stonebridge Crossing to Park Road, then east along Park Road up to the bridge at the Aquatic Centre.  He notes, "It was just an overlay to smooth out some of the transitions and some of the bumps and deterioration in the existing asphalt. We had to do some preparation, cutting back some of the sod that had grown over onto the path and remove grass and weeds coming up in the cracks and (we) swept it. Then they (Maple Leaf Construction) were able to just come and oil it and put a 2 inch lift over top."

Reimer says the 60 thousand dollar cost was not in the city's 5 year capital plan. However, the department was able to use money from an increased sidewalk maintenance fund and also borrowed from a couple of other areas to make it happen.

Reimer adds this new smooth path along with the new path from Hespeler to Deerfield gives residents some great recreational venues. He says, "Definitely our regional bike path system has been a priority with council. It's giving people some pretty good options to use for their recreational walking, biking, running and that kind of thing."
