The Stuartburn Fire Chief says the situation near Vita is slowly improving.

Crews have been battling a large brush fire southeast of that community since Thursday afternoon. As of Friday at 4 pm, Bob Fosty says they have the north, east and west sides contained.

"We're working on the south edge right now," he says. "And that's looking pretty good."

Fosty says the situation has improved thanks in large part to a path that was cleared by a backhoe. This allowed crews to gain access to the south edge of the fire. But he says the work is not done.

"We'll be here for awhile yet," says Fosty.

He notes their primary task is to knock down the fire. After that, they will make a second sweep around the perimeter. With numerous trees catching fire, Fosty says they will need to cut those down and toss them into the burn area, ensuring the fire does not grow.

According to the Fire Chief, the burn area is approximately two miles long and up to one mile wide. He notes there were some homes in the vicinity, but all buildings have been fire guarded and are safe.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Fosty says they have eight firefighters currently battling the blaze. He notes the weather has been mostly cool and calm today which has worked to their advantage.
