A couple in La Broquerie got a rude surprise early Saturday morning. A speeding van, driven by a drunk driver, slammed into their home around 6:30 a-m.

La Broquerie fire chief Al Nadeau says police believe the blue mini van was doing about 80 miles per hour at the time. It travelled northbound through La Broquerie and crashed through a dead end sign, struck a tree and then slammed into a house, leaving a big hole in the basement wall. As for damage, Nadeau says, "There's, I'd say, 40 to 60 thousand dollars damage to the house. The basement is fairly damaged."

Surprisingly the man was not injured. Chief Nadeau notes the airbag deployed and did its job.

RCMP say the man had 3 times the legal limit of alcohol in his system.
