RCMP have provided more information regarding the fatal collision on Highway 1 early Friday morning.

At 5:25 A.M. RCMP received a report of a vehicle travelling the wrong way on the Trans-Canada Highway, approximately 8 kilometres east of Deacon’s Corner in the RM of Tache. Officers in the area immediately headed toward that location.

Then, at 5:32 A.M., police received a report of a head-on collision at that same location. The initial investigation has determined a 70-year-old man from Winnipeg was travelling eastbound in a westbound lane on Highway 1 when his vehicle struck a westbound car head-on. The 70-year-old man was the only occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced deceased on scene.

An earlier release said the second driver was a man from Mitchell, however, RCMP have issued a correction. The westbound car was in fact being driven by a 30-year-old man from La Broquerie. He was transported to hospital in Winnipeg with serious injuries.

The westbound lanes of the Trans-Canada between Station Road and Heatherdale Road were closed for several hours and traffic was detoured while officers conducted an investigation at the scene. An RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstructionist attended to assist with the investigation.
