Motorists driving north of Steinbach will soon have another traffic light to drive through, on their way to the Trans Canada Highway.

Glenn Cuthbertson with Manitoba Infrastructure says before the end of the year, crews will begin installing traffic signals at the Highway 12/ Provincial Road 311 intersection at Blumenort. In fact, Cuthbertson says work will begin imminently. He says they are targeting the end of March to have the work complete.

Cuthbertson says it is only traffic signals that are needed there, and all highway infrastructure will be staying exactly as is. However, there will be advanced warning flashers along Highway 12, advising motorists of what lies ahead. Manitoba Infrastructure will also put in a request to have the speed limit reduced to 80 km/h just before and after the lights. The traffic lights will include protected left turns.

The project has a budget of $500,000. Cuthbertson says it is fully funded by the province.

Last fall, the Local Urban District committee of Blumenort made a request to Manitoba Infrastructure, asking for traffic signals to be installed at that busy intersection.

"If you drive up and down that road you will know that there is more and more people," says Cuthbertson. "And eventually it gets to the point where we need to manage the interaction amongst them and traffic signals is the tool that we use to do that."
