A few days of hot, sunny weather will transition into cooler, wetter conditions as we near the May long weekend.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement as the result of temperatures being forecast in the 30 degree range to start the week. In fact, Steinbach could get very close to breaking heat records both today and tomorrow.

The forecast high for today is 30 degrees. The hottest temperature ever recorded on May 17 in Steinbach was 31.1 degrees back in 1972. The forecast high for tomorrow is also 30 degrees. The hottest temperature ever recorded on May 18 in Steinbach was 32.0 degrees back in 1994.

But, then the weather changes. Starting Wednesday evening and for the rest of the week, there is a chance of showers in the forecast each day.

"It's not going to be driving rain for the entire time," says Natalie Hasell with Environment Canada. "It's going to be showers, so on and off precipitation, maybe little pockets, there might be a few thunderstorms imbedded in that stuff."

And, it is going to be cooler. Daytime highs of 13 and 15 degrees are forecast for Thursday and Friday respectively. She notes the coolest temperature in the forecast right now is 4 degrees on Saturday night.

The normal high for this time of year is 21 degrees, while the normal low is 7 degrees.

Back to the precipitation, just because there are showers in the forecast every day, Hasell says that does not mean we should expect high accumulations. In fact, she notes accumulatively, we may receive 10 millimetres of rain before the weekend.

"Models are pointing to several days of cloudy, wettish weather," she says. "But how much is actually going to fall, doesn't look very significant at this time."
