It could be another record-breaking day for weather in Southern Manitoba.

Environment Canada is calling for a high of six degrees in Steinbach today and that would break the record of 5.5 degrees set back in 2015. In fact, Meteorologist Natalie Hasell says there is also a chance that tomorrow's record falls. The record high for December 7th is 5.0 degrees set in 1984. Environment Canada is currently calling for a high of five degrees on Thursday.

Hasell explains that at the surface, there is a low-pressure system with the centre to the north that is allowing the warm air to reach into the Red River Valley. This will cause temperatures to be well above normal for the next two days. In addition to that, Hasell explains that aloft, most of the southern prairies are under the influence of a ridge, which is centred south of us and promoting warm air.

According to Hasell, there is a low-pressure system that is currently developing in southern Alberta. She says it should make its way into southern Manitoba by Thursday night. As a result, Friday's high is +1 with rain or snow and windy.

Hasell says even though we are less than two days away from feeling the impact of this system, the models are not agreeing on how much precipitation might fall. She says it will likely start as rain Thursday night before turning to snow on Friday. According to Hasell, some models are suggesting that as much as 10 to 15 centimetres of snow could fall in southwestern Manitoba. She notes snowfall amounts are much more up in the air for the Red River Valley.

"Right now, the forecast is suggesting that the snow should be done by the time we get to Saturday morning, but the temperatures will be below zero," adds Hasell.

Once the system moves out, Hasell says we should see a return to normal for temperatures. The normal high for this time of year is -8 degrees. Environment Canada is calling for a high of -8 on Monday.
