May was a big month for development in Steinbach.

$32.7M in building permits were pulled in the month of May alone, bringing the year-to-date total up to $45.5M.

By this point in 2021, $30.4M in permits had been pulled in Steinbach, and that was considered to be quite encouraging.

Steinbach Mayor Earl Funk says a few big projects really bumped up the numbers this past month.

"We have a multi-family dwelling being put up on Woodhaven for $3.75M. Commercial building and commercial development in our community is alive and well. We have one that is $21.3M and that is the new business office for Penn-Co."

Funk says there is also a $1.1M renovation happening at the Steinbach Regional Secondary School on McKenzie Boulevard that is worth highlighting.

With all that said, Funk notes these big commercial projects are also balanced nicely by residential development.

"We have added a total of 50 dwelling units this month, so that gives us 93 new dwelling units for the year-to-date. To break down the $32.7M from May, $8.7M of the total is in residential and commercial and industrial development is just over $24M."

Permits have been pulled for 51 single and two-family dwelling units as well as 42 multi-family units in the first five months of 2022.

By this time in 2021, construction had begun on a total of 86 dwelling units.

Funk notes these are incredibly encouraging numbers, especially considering the fact that there are a number of large projects still in the pipeline for Steinbach this year.
