The Relay for Life in Steinbach is moving to a new location. The annual event is held in May to create awareness and raise money for cancer research and has been hosted at A.D. Penner Park for the past ten years or so. Chair William Chabot says it was a good location but, after some vandalism last year and declining participation, the committee decided to move it to Mennonite Heritage Village next year.

"And, we wanted to do a little bit of a change, see how it would work out. We figure the Mennonite Museum would be really nice for people. When they're walking, they can see some of the old stuff that's there, the old buildings, and then we'll be going around the windmill. They also have their summer kitchen so we can do our cooking right out of the summer kitchen. All-in-all, it's set up better for what we need."

Chabot says another reason for the change is that they were always on a tight timeline to clean up at A.D. Penner Park because the site was needed for another event the next day.

Participation has steadily declined over the last five years, dropping from 285 people in 2011 to 87 last year.

Meanwhile, the Steinbach Relay for Life won two awards last weekend; one for the highest survivor to participant ratio and the other for the highest average online donations. The 2016 event is scheduled for May 27th.
