The parking lot next to city hall in Steinbach will keep its meters for now.
Harvest Insurance sent city council a letter asking that the meters be removed.  It feels customers should have access to free parking, the same as in other city-owned lots.  But councillor Michael Zwaagstra moved to deny the request.  He notes prior to having meters in that lot, employees of area businesses tied up the spaces, leaving customers nowhere to park.  Councillor Zwaagstra adds if a high traffic retail business moves into the old Shoppers Drug Mart building, it'll be important to make sure the parking spots keep rotating.  On the other hand, he says if it becomes an office with low customer traffic, council could reconsider.  Council was unanimous in its decision Tuesday night.
