Steinbach is poised to shatter a heat record this afternoon.

Environment Canada is forecasting a high of 30 degrees for Steinbach. And, according to Meteorologist Natalie Hasell, we would not even need to get close to that mark to set a new record. She notes the record high for September 28 is 25.5 degrees set in 1998. As of 1 pm it was already 24 degrees in the Automobile City.

According to Hasell, we are under the influence of an upper ridge, which is usually associated with extreme temperatures. The ridge is centered in the southern U.S, producing a large area of hot air. She notes in the winter months it would be an arctic ridge from the north producing very cold temperatures. Hasell says these ridges tend to bring calmer weather, lighter winds and clear skies.

Southern Manitoba has been under the influence of this ridge for a couple of days already, but Hasell says today should be the hottest day of the week. Wednesday's forecast is still 29 degrees and then it looks like the next low pressure system will come through bringing showers and possibly thunderstorms by Wednesday evening.

The normal high for this time of year is 16 degrees, while the normal low is 4. Hasell says Tuesday night's low is 18 degrees and then Wednesday night it will dip to 14. After that, she says overnight lows should return to near normal. Having said that, she says there is no imminent threat of frost on the horizon, which means we could make it through September without having to cover our flowers or vegetables.
