Steinbach city council is close to finalizing an Administrative Penalty Bylaw to handle infractions of the city's parking and traffic bylaws. The province has ordered cities to set up a system to handle appeals of parking tickets by appointing an adjudicator who will have the final say. This will keep these tickets out of the court system. Deputy Mayor John Fehr says, meeting in committee this week, city council gave its initial approval to the adjudication plan.

"In principle, we've decided it's what we want to do so I think we're good with the way it's been prepared. While we were looking at that, we saw a number of other things might have drawn our attention to other things that might need some addressing as well."

For example, city council also agreed to adjust parking fines. The fine for illegal parking in a handicapped stall will be doubled from $50 to $100. Other parking fine rates are also getting another look with recommendations expected in the coming weeks.

Council expects to give final approval to the administrative penalty bylaw in the coming months.
