The local area manager for Canada Post says there is no local impact from an announcement Wednesday by the federal government. The government announced it was stopping the process of converting areas with door-to-door mail delivery to community mailbox service. Bernie Stahn says that will have zero effect on Steinbach.

"In Steinbach, we have community mailbox delivery. That will stay. That is not relevant to the decision Wednesday because we never did have letter carrier delivery so it doesn't apply."

Stahn adds the announcement also does not affect the transition to community mailboxes in the rural parts of many local municipalities which will continue.

"The community mailbox rollout to rural areas like Hanover, La Broquerie and Tache will continue. We have worked with a lot of RMs to put community mailbox delivery into their areas when they go to the civic addressing. That process will continue, that is not affected."

Stahn notes, Portage la Prairie is also in the area that he manages for Canada Post and the government announcement is a big deal for them because Portage will now get to keep its door-to-door delivery.
