Weight restrictions are put into place to protect roads during spring thaw.Road restrictions will take effect Thursday, March 15 in the City of Steinbach and the RM of Hanover. Randy Reimer, head of Public Works for the City of Steinbach, outlines the details of the load limits that are allowed during the spring thaw.

"Those restrictions apply to all of our asphalt roads and gravel roads. What we allow is 60 per cent of a normal payload on those roads. The roads that are concrete going into our industrial parks, we allow trucks to run with normal payloads."

Reimer says the road restrictions are put into place to prevent roads from getting beaten up by heavy traffic as the frost is coming out of the ground.

"We've noticed the frost coming out on some of the gravel roads and the reason we run spring weight restrictions is to protect our roads, especially our asphalt roads."

Meanwhile, road restrictions on provincial highways and roadways will come into effect next Tuesday, March 20.
