The Eastman Selects lost 6-5 in overtime to the Winnipeg Wild. Evan Gradt potted the OT winner for the Wild who now lead the City U17 AAA Hockey League’s best-of-five semifinal two games to one. Calem Normandeau had a pair of goals for the Selects while singles went to Mario Gagnon, Colton Pakoo and Jeremiah Warkentine. Game four goes Thursday night at Bell MTS Iceplex.

 

Virden Oil Capitals forward Braden Fischer is the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Most Valuable Player. The 19-year-old Winnipeg native has 31 goals and 38 assists in 49 games this season. Winnipeg Blues captain Braden Foreman is the recipient of the Frank McKinnon Memorial Trophy for hockey ability & sportsmanship. Carson Cherepak of the Dauphin Kings received the Ed Belfour Top Goaltender Trophy. Parker Malchuk of the Kings is the Top Defenseman. Virden’s Carson Buydens won the Kim Davis Rookie of the Year Award and Dauphin's Doug Hedley is the Coach of the Year.

 

Daniel Hauser stopped all 14 shots he faced as the Winnipeg Ice blanked the Calgary Hitmen 2-0. Benjamin Zloty and Tanner Brown did the goal scoring for the Western Hockey League’s East Division leading Ice.

 

The Winnipeg Jets scored four third period goals en route to a 7-4 victory over the reigning Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning at Canada Life Centre. Paul Stastny scored twice for the Jets while Mark Scheifele had a goal and assisted on three others. Adam Lowry, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Josh Morrissey and Kyle Connor with his team leading 34th of the season also scored for Winnipeg. The Jets begin a four-game road trip Friday when they face the New York Islanders.

 

Golf Canada announced a full championship schedule for the first time in two years on Tuesday after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of dozens of tournaments. The RBC Canadian Open will be held at St. George’s Golf & Country Club in Toronto starting June 6th. The CP Women’s Open will take place in Ottawa in August. The Breezy Bend Country Club in Headingley will host the Canadian Women’s Mid-Amateur and Senior Championship August 30th to September 1st.

 

Canada’s Wheelchair Curling team has a 6-3 record at the 2022 Winter Paralympic Games in Beijing. Mark Ideson, Ina Forrest, Jon Thurston and Manitoban Dennis Thiessen defeated Great Britain 6-3 and Estonia 9-3. Canada will play its final round robin game Thursday against Norway. Canadian athletes have won 16 medals in Beijing including seven gold, two silver and seven bronze. Canada’s most decorated Winter Paralympian, Brian McKeever of Canmore, won the men’s visually impaired sprint cross-country for his 15th career Paralympic gold medal. Natalie Wikie of Salmon Arm won gold in the women’s standing Para cross-country skiing sprint event.
