The Red River Mudbugs are one win away from joining the Lorette Comets and Springfield Xtreme in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League semifinals. Lucas Dyck and Braden Hildebrand scored three goals each as Red River downed Niverville 7-1 Monday night in St. Jean. Sam Hicks had the other goal for the Mudbugs who lead the best-of-five opening round series two games to one. Dylan Peters had the lone goal for the Clippers who will host game four on Wednesday night.

 

The Winnipeg Jets opened their four-game homestand with a 3-1 loss to Chicago at Canada Life Centre. Marc-Andre Fleury made 31 saves in net for the Blackhawks. Alex DeBrincat scored the go-ahead goal at 9:42 of the third period. Brandon Hagel sealed the deal with an empty netter with 56 seconds left. Patrick Kane had the other Chicago goal. Mark Scheifele potted his 14th of the season for the Jets at 6:17 of the final frame which tied the game at 1-1. Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck made 21 saves.

 

Canada has won its second gold medal of the Winter Games in Beijing. Long track speedskaters Valerie Maltais of Saguenay and Ivanie Blondin & Isabelle Weidemann of Ottawa captured gold in the women's team pursuit. Max Parrot of Bromont won bronze in the men's snowboard big air competition. Canada's medal count is 17 with two gold, four silver and 11 bronze. The Canadian men's hockey team defeated China 7-2 and advanced to the quarterfinals. In curling - Jennifer Jones has a 3-3 record and will face Tabitha Peterson of the United States tonight. Brad Gushue beat Xiehue Ma of China 10-8 and lost 7-6 in an extra end to Sergey Glukhov of the Russian Olympic Committee. Gushue has a 5-3 record.

 

South Central Athletic Conference High School Basketball - Steinbach Regional varsity boys lost 80-45 to Dakota Collegiate. Angel Renacia had 17 points for the Sabres while Tom Bola-Bolumole added 11.
