The Steinbach Pistons begin round two of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League playoffs Friday night at the T.G. Smith Centre. The Pistons will face the Virden Oil Capitals in game one of their best-of-seven semifinal. Game two goes Saturday night also in Steinbach. The series then shifts to Tundra Oil & Gas Place in Virden for games three & four next week Tuesday and Wednesday.

 

The Brandon Wheat Kings play their final home game of the regular season schedule tonight when they meet the Moose Jaw Warriors at Westoba Place. The Wheat Kings are three points behind Moose Jaw and Saskatoon who are tied for fourth place in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Conference with 78 points each. Brandon and Moose Jaw have three games left while Saskatoon has one.

 

Evgeny Svechnikov scored the go-ahead goal 11 minutes into the third period and Adam Lowry added an empty netter with 1:29 remaining as Winnipeg beat the Habs 4-2 in Montreal. Morgan Barron and Paul Stastny also scored for the Jets who have eight games left and are five points back of the Dallas Stars who hold down the second wildcard spot in the NHL’s Western Conference. Winnipeg's next game is Wednesday against the Seattle Kraken at Canada Life Centre.

 

Murray Warren of Brandon and Judy Colwell of East St. Paul won the 2022 Provincial Master Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships this past weekend at the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club in Winnipeg and will represent our province at the National Championships this November at the Pembina Curling Club in Winnipeg. Warren along with third Brian Barker, second Terry Warren and lead Reg Warren defeated Mark Franklin of the Granite 6-4. Colwell along with third Wendy Nykoluk, second Donna Smiley, lead Leslie Brown and fifth Debbie Palson beat Sandra Cowling of Hamiota 8-6.

 

Jordon McDonald, Jace Freeman, Elias Huminicki and Cam Olafson of Deer Lodge and Zoey Terrick, Cassidy Dundas, Tessa Terrick and Madison Sagert of Neepawa captured the Provincial U18 Men's and Women's Championships at the Heather Curling Club in Winnipeg and will represent Manitoba at the 2022 Canadian Championships May 1st-7th in Oakville, Ontario. Provincial finalists Ryan Ostrowsky of West St. Paul and Grace Beaudry of St. Vital will also compete at the Nationals.
