The Provincial High School Baseball Championship begins today in Brandon. The Zone 13 champion Steinbach Regional Secondary School Sabres will meet Garden Valley of Winkler at 11:30 a.m. and Carberry/Cartwright/Baldur at 5:30 p.m. The Stonewall Rams, Garden City Fighting Gophers and the Helen Betty Osborne Huskies are in Pool One. The host Vincent Massey Vikings, Boissevain/Wawanesa Broncos and McCreary/Ste. Rose Expos are in Pool Two. The Portage Collegiate Trojans, Birtle/Shoal Lake/Strathclair and William Morton of Gladstone are in Pool Four. The top two teams in each pool advance to the quarterfinals.


The Landmark 96'ers dropped a 11-1 decision to the Virden Golden Bears in their fastpitch wildcard semifinal yesterday in Glenboro. The Pilot Mound Pilots defeated Virden 10-0 in the final and qualified for the Provincial High School Fastpitch Championship that begins Friday in Brandon. The St. Joachim Braves are representing Zone 13.


The Carillon Sultans game against the St, James A's was postponed as the ball diamond at Optimist Park was unplayable. It's the sixth time this season the Sultans had a game postponed because of rain or wet diamonds. Carillon has zero wins, zero losses, one suspended game and six postponed games to start the 2022 Manitoba Junior Baseball League season. The Sultans are scheduled to play a doubleheader against the Pembina Valley Orioles Sunday in Steinbach.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes swept a twinbill from the Cleburne Railroaders at Shaw Park. Logan Hill homered as the Fish won the opener 5-1. Winnipeg scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning and took the second game 10-6.


The Manitoba Men's Match Play Championships begin today at Quarry Oaks. Steinbach’s Adam Guenther, who plays out of Elmhurst and is the second seed, will face clubmate Jacob Taweel in the round of 32. Jamie Roy of Quarry Oaks will take on Brad Pardy of Shilo. The Women's and Senior Men's Match Play Championships begin Friday.


The University of Manitoba Bisons men's golf team is in a tie for 16th place after day one of the 2022 Canadian University/College Championships in Bromont, Quebec. The Bisons are 30 shots back of the first place University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. Stefan Lavallee was the low Bison as he fired an even par 72 and is 11th overall in the individual competition. Brent Ingram was 77, Connor Stewart was 80, Lachlan Allerton was 84 and Cole Peters was 85.
