The Steinbach Pistons and Winkler Flyers have joined the Virden Oil Capitals in round two of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League playoffs. Braden Birnie scored his second goal of the game on the power play with 55 seconds left in regulation as Steinbach rallied from a 3-1 third period deficit and beat Selkirk 4-3. The Pistons took the best-of-seven opening round series four games to one. Winkler doubled up on the Winnipg Blues 4-2 and captured that series in six games. The Oil Capitals swept the Waywayseecappo Wolverines in round one. The Dauphin Kings host the Swan Valley Stampeders Friday night in game five of their series. The Kings lead the best-of-seven three games to one.

 

The Winnipeg Jets dropped a 3-1 decision to Detroit at Canada Life Centre. Sam Gagner scored twice for the Red Wings who received a 32-save performance from Thomas Greiss. Mark Scheifele had the lone goal for the Jets who have 11 games left and are seven points back of the Dallas Stars who hold down the second wild card spot in the NHL’s Western Conference.

 

Evan Polei, Bobby Lynch and Jeff Malott did the goal scoring as the Manitoba Moose defeated the Milwaukee Admirals 3-2. Nicholas Jones chipped in with a pair of assists.

 

Brad Gushue had a win and a loss Wednesday at the 2022 World Men’s Curling Championship in Las Vegas. Gushue, Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker dropped a 7-5 decision to Niklas Edin of Sweden and then beat Kalle Kiiskinen of Finland 8-3. The four-time Canadian champions are in first place with a 7-1 record and will meet Korey Dropkin of the United States at 11 a.m.
