The Carillon Sultans series opener against the St. Boniface Legionaires at Whittier Park was rained out Tuesday night. The Sultans and Legionaires will meet tonight (7 p.m.) at A.D. Penner Park in Steinbach in game one of their best-of-three Manitoba Junior Baseball League quarterfinal. Game two goes Thursday at Whittier Park. 


Max Murphy drilled his 20th home run of the season as the Winnipeg Goldeyes defeated the Dogs 12-2 in Chicago.  David Washington also homered for the Fish who broke the game open thanks to a seven-run sixth inning.


Clara Peake of Binscarth was the only Manitoban to break 80 on day one of the 108th Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship at Westmount Golf & Country Club in Kitchener, Ontario. Peake was six-over par 79 Tuesday and is in a tie for 61st place. Cala Korman of Killarney was 81; Manitoba champion Jeri Lafleche of Clear Lake was 82; Manitoba junior champion Addison Kartusch of St. Charles and Charmaine Mackid of Breezy Bend were 83 and Rhonda Orr of Southwood was 87. Leigh Chien has the lead heading into round two. The 16-year-old from Irvine, California opened with a seven-under par 66.


Winnipeg Blue Bombers wide receiver Greg Ellingson has been named a CFL Top Performer for his work in Friday’s 26-19 win over the Calgary Stampeders at IG Field. Ellingson caught 11 passes for 152 yards. He now leads the league in receiving yardage with 518 and receptions with 34, all in just six games. Ellingson has scored three touchdowns so far in 2022.
