The Eastman Selects face the Interlake Lightning tonight (7 p.m.) in Niverville in game one of their best-of-five Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League quarterfinal. The third place Selects, who won their last nine league games, beat the sixth place Lightning 3-0 this past Saturday in their regular season finale.


The Eastman Selects meet the last place Kenora Thistles tonight (8 p.m.) at the SunGro Centre in Beausejour. The Selects are three points back of the Norman Northstars in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League. Eastman has three games left and the Northstars have two.


Steinbach Regional has applied to the MHSAA for a wildcard spot in the Provincial AAAA High School Hockey Championship that takes next month in Winnipeg. The Sabres were eliminated by the St. Paul's Crusaders in the Winnipeg High School Hockey Leagues Platinum Promotions Division quarterfinals. The SRSS applied for a wildcard last year. Steinbach Regional beat the Lord Selkirk Royals in their wildcard game to get into the Provincials. The Sabres then went on to capture the Provincial AAAA championship banner with a historic 2-1 win over the Garden City Fighting Gophers at Hockey for All Centre. 


Gabriel Vilardi scored a pair of power play goals and Laurent Brossoit made 36 saves in the Winnipeg Jets 6-3 victory over the Minnesota Wild Tuesday night at Canada Life Centre. Mason Appleton, Sean Monahan, Nino Niederreiter and Kyle Connor with his 20th of the season also scored for the Jets who were coming off a 6-3 loss to the Flames in Calgary on Monday. 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Justin Courtney. Courtney has spent most of his career in the New York Mets’ organization, with a brief stint in the Los Angeles Angels’ system. He finished the 2023 campaign with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League – a Major League Baseball Partner League. The 27-year-old Bangor, Maine native was signed by the Angels as a free agent after five seasons at the University of Maine (Orono, Maine). Courtney began the 2023 season with the Class-AAA Syracuse Mets of the International League and becomes the sixth player on the Goldeyes’ roster with experience at the Class-AAA level.
