Gabrielle Roy captured the Provincial High School Varsity Boys AA Basketball championship. Les Roys defeated the host Virden Bears 97-68 in the final. Stellan Chammartin was named the tournament MVP. Easton Dubois and Marcus Cook were selected All-Stars along with Green Valley’s Ethan Giesbrecht. The Pirates beat Prairie Mountain 89-85 in the third place game. The Ross L. Gray Raiders of Sprague lost 74-41 to Gilbert Plains/Grandview in the third place game at the A boys championship in Grandview. Pinawa downed Elm Creek 81-56 in the consolation final. Ross L. Gray fell 35-33 to host Gilbert Plains in the consolation final at the A girls championship.


Ethan Unger scored twice and Brandon Palmer made 35 saves as the Steinbach Huskies shutout the Red River Mudbugs 7-0 in St. Jean and now lead the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League’s best-of-seven final two games to none. Keyan Grimard, Eric Mateychuk, Mark Plett, Ian Friesen and Ethan Plett also scored for the Huskies. Mudbugs netminder Connor Parago faced 50 shots. Game three goes Sunday night at the T.G. Smith Centre.


The Steinbach Pistons won their regular season finale Saturday night at the T.G. Smith Centre. Ian Amsbaugh scored twice as Steinbach defeated the Winnipeg Freeze 7-2. Ethan Johnson, Langley Kruggel, Travis Hensrud, Kirk Mullen and Nicholas Mikan also found the back of the net for the Pistons who open the Manitoba Junior Hockey League playoffs next Friday at home against the Winkler Flyers.


The Brandon Wheat Kings lost 3-2 to the Blades in Saskatoon. Nolan Flamand and Caleb Hadland did the goal scoring for the Wheat Kings who have two games left and trail Calgary by four points in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Hockey League’s Eastern Conference. The Hitmen have four games left. Daniel Hauser made 19 saves and Matthew Savoie had three assists as the Winnipeg Ice downed the Prince Albert Raiders 4-1.


Brandon’s Assiniboine Community College will meet Northeastern University in the semifinals Sunday at the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II Championship in Boston. Steinbach’s Geneva Penner stopped all 13 shots she faced and Aidan Roberts of Winnipeg and Simone Turner of Carman scored three goals each as the defending champion Cougars shutout Adrian College 7-0 and finished the round robin with a 3-0 record.


Neal Pionk scored 55 seconds into overtime to lift the Winnipeg Jets past the Predators 3-2 in Nashville. Nikolaj Ehlers and Adam Lowry also scored for the Jets. Winnipeg’s Connor Hellebuyck made 18 saves.


The Manitoba Moose scored four unanswered first period goals and beat the Chicago Wolves 6-1. Jansen Harkins and Jeff Mallot each had a goal and an assist for the Moose. Manitoba goaltender Arvid Holm stopped 33 shots.


Canada’s Kerri Einarson won her opener at the 2023 World Women’s Curling Championship in Sandviken, Sweden. Einarson, Val Sweeting, Shannon Birchard and Briane Harris stole points in the 9th and 10th ends and defeated Anna Hasselborg of Sweden 9-4. The Gimli Curling Club foursome will face Tabitha Peterson of the United States and Marianne Roervik of Norway on Sunday.
