The Eastman Selects lost their pre-season opener 4-3 to the Interlake Lightning in Stonewall. Ava Boily, Ginger Fast and Mackenzie Waddell did the goal scoring for Eastman. Bailey Grunewald and Orieanna Kennedy combined to make 20 saves. The Selects, who will play four games this weekend at the Central Plains Capitals Pre-Season Showcase in Portage, open the 2022-23 Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League season Saturday, October 1st against the defending champion Westman Wildcats in Niverville. 


Cody Eakin has signed a professional tryout agreement with the Calgary Flames. The 31-year-old Winnipeg native played the last two seasons with the Buffalo Sabres. He previously played with the Washington Capitals, Dallas Stars, Vegas Golden Knights and Winnipeg Jets. Eakin, who was selected by Washington in the third round (85th overall) of the 2009 National Hockey League Draft, has 110 goals and 256 points in 701 NHL games. 


The Carillon Sultans face the Stonewall Blue Jays tonight (7:30 p.m.) at Koskie Field in game three of the Winnipeg Senior Baseball League's best-of-five final. The series is tied at one. The Sutlans won the opener 6-5 last Wednesday at Charleswood Park. The Jays took game two 7-3 the following night at Quarry Park.
