Team Manitoba captured gold at the 2023 WHL Cup Sunday in Red Deer. Brek Liske of Beausejour scored twice in the shootout to lift Manitoba past Alberta 6-5 in the championship game. Carson Carels of Cypress River scored a pair of goals in regulation for Team Manitoba while singles went to Koy Funk of Portage la Prairie and Aiden Jacobson and Carter Haney of Winnipeg. Peyton Shore of Winnipeg made 53 saves in the victory. It's Manitoba's first gold medal winning performance in the history of the WHL Cup. Zach Lansard of Ste. Anne had two goals in five games. 


The Eastman Selects scored four first period goals en route to a 9-1 victory over the Thistles in Kenora. Grayson Slaney had three goals and three assists for the Selects who snapped a three-game losing skid. Job Peters added a pair of goals for Eastman while the rest went to Ashton Cure, Calyb Moore, Calem Normandeau and Cameron Sylvester. Selects netminder Samuel Fontaine stopped 17 of the 18 shots he faced. 


The Lorette Comets and Springfield Xtreme were winners in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League Sunday. Tyler Van de Velde scored twice and Matt Ramsey potted the go-ahead goal on the power play 4:11 into the third period as Lorette edged the Clippers 4-3 in Niverville. Martin Waldner also scored for the Comets. Caleb Funk, Teo Lambert and Aiden Bloomfield replied for the Clippers. Nathan Bartecki, Braeden Rebeck and Sam Sass scored two goals each as Springfield downed St. Clements 10-2. Mattix Carpenter, Xander Small, Ben Chambers and Kai Orchard also scored for the Xtreme. Reiden Bunting and Nick Magwood did the goal scoring for the Gators. 


The Steinbach Pistons face the OCN Blizzard on day one of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League Showcase at the Seven Oaks Sportsplex in Winnipeg. The opening face-off is at 7 p.m. The reigning Turnbull Cup champions will also meet the Neepawa Titans on Wednesday afternoon. 


Jennifer Jones and Joel Retornaz won the first Grand Slam curling event of the season. Jones, Karlee Burgess, Emily Zacharias and Lauren Lenentine defeated Kaitlyn Lawes 7-4 in the women's final of the Hearing Life Tour Challenge in Niagara Falls. Retornaz beat Brendan Bottcher 4-3 in an extra end in the men's final. 


The Steinbach Regional Secondary School will face the Dakota Lancers in the Winnipeg High School Football League's ANAVETS Bowl quarterfinals Friday (5 p.m.) at Dakota Collegiate. The Sabres defeated the Vincent Massey Trojans 16-6 last Friday and finished in third place in the AAAA Conference's South East Division with a 5-2 record. The Lancers and Grant Park Pirates were 6-1 and tied for top spot.
