The Steinbach Pistons selected forward Luca Pura of Winnipeg with the 13th overall pick in round one of the 2024 Manitoba Junior Hockey League Draft on Sunday. The Pistons also took forward Mathias Sibilleau of St. Francois Xavier in round two; defenseman Jett Deschamps of Headingley in round four; defenseman Colin Krestanowich of Winnipeg in round five; forward Peyton Thiessen of Beausejour in round six and defenseman Hudson Kowalchuk of Winnipeg in round eight. The Neepawa Titans selected defenseman Grayson Slaney of Dominion City in round two. The OCN Blizzard took defenseman Benson Hirst of Lac du Bonnet and the Winkler Flyers chose forward Noah Stott of Steinbach in round three. The Swan Valley Stampeders took defenseman Jacob Reimer of Lorette in round four. Winkler selected forward Zachary Lansard of Ste. Anne and OCN took forward Kylan Olson of Grande Pointe in round five. In round six Neepawa selected forward Daniel De Gagne of Lorette, Virden choose defenseman Lucas Laramee of La Broquerie and Winkler selected forward Colter Martens of Grunthal.


The Niverville Nighthawks selected forward River Arnason of Winnipeg with the seventh overall pick in round one of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League Draft. The Nighthawks also took forward Ben Dnes of Winnipeg in round three; forward Ryden Duchon of Winnipeg in round four; defenseman Danny Cross of Winnipeg and forward Carter Kingerski of Headingley in round five and defenseman Kellan Sichewski of Garson in round six.


The Saginaw Spirit are Memorial Cup champions. Josh Bloom scored the go-ahead goal with 21.7 seconds left to lift the host Spirit past the London Knights 4-3 in the championship game on Sunday night. Saginaw is the eighth first-time participant to win the Memorial Cup since 1972. The Spirit are also the third host team in the last six tournaments to win the championship. Moose Jaw Warriors captain and Dominion City native Denton Mateychuk was named to the CHL First All-Star Team. 


The Carillon Sultans scored late in both games and swept a doubleheader from the Winnipeg South Wolves Sunday at A.D. Penner Park in Steinbach. Meech Nadeau's fielder's choice plated Rylan Penner with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Carillon took the opener 3-2. Brady Papineau drove in three runs and his sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning scored the go-ahead run as the Sultans won game two 4-3. Carillon is in first place in the Manitoba Junior Baseball League with a 9-1 record and will face the 7-1 Elmwood Giants Wednesday at Koskie Field. The Giants beat the Sultans 5-4 this past Friday in Steinbach ending Carillon's season opening seven-game winning streak. 


Rob Emery, Max Murphy and Andy Armstrong belted three-run homers as the Winnipeg Goldeyes bounced the Lincoln Saltdogs 15-2. Zac Reininger picked up the win in his return to the mound after missing his last start with an injury. He threw six innings allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out two. The Fish open a three-game series against the Kane County Cougars tonight (6:30 p.m.) at Blue Cross Park. 


Marco Trstenjak of Elmhurst, Addison Kartusch of St. Charles and Rob Oliphant of Rossmere won the Manitoba Match Play Championships Sunday at the Breezy Bend Country Club. Trstenjak defeated Thomas Scott of Dauphin 4 & 3 in the men’s final. Kartusch earned a 6 & 5 victory over Jeri Lafleche of Niakwa in the women’s final. Oliphant shaded Jay Doyle of Niakwa 2 & 1 in the senior men’s final.
