St. Adolphe's Avery Pickering and her Team Canada teammates are bringing home gold medals from the 2023 World Women's U18 Hockey Championship in Ostersund, Sweden. Caitlin Kraemer scored four times and Hannah Clark made 21 saves as Canada defeated host Sweden 10-0. Canada claimed back-to-back gold medals for the first time since winning three straight in 2012, 2013 and 2014. 


Ginger Fast scored twice and Kaylee Irwin had a pair of assists in the Eastman Selects 3-2 victory over the Pembina Valley Hawks in Niverville. Sophia Heidinger also scored for the Selects who lead 1-0 and 3-1 at the period breaks. Orieanna Kennedy made 25 saves. 


The Steinbach Pistons have lost back-to-back games for just the second time this season. Steinbach dropped a 3-2 decison to the Virden Oil Capitals Sunday at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Layton Veitch scored the go-ahead goal for the Oil Capitals with 3:55 left in regulation. Ian Amsbaugh and Kirk Mullen scored power play goals for the Pistons who trailed 2-0 after the first period and 2-1 after 40 minutes. Virden beat Steinbach 3-2 Friday night at the T.G. Smith Centre.


Dylan Peters scored the tying goal 1:49 into the third period and then potted the shootout winner as the Niverville Clippers edged the Red River Mudbugs 5-4 in the lone Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League game. Micah Funk had a pair of goals in regulation for the hometown Clippers while the other went to Teo Lambert. Braden Hildebrand scored twice for the Mudbugs and singles went to Andy Boger and Jonah Neufeld. 


Jeremie Collette, Ethan Doell and Radek Merasty did the goal scoring and William Paterson made 23 saves as the St. Malo Warriors won their eighth straight defeating the Arborg Ice Dawgs 3-1. 


The Warren Mercs and Portage Islanders were winners in the SEMHL Sunday. Jarrett Hogue made 25 saves as Warren shutout Altona 4-0. Chase Faulkner, Carson Ouellette, Scott Corbett and Brenden Luschinski did the goal scoring for the defending champion Mercs. Maroons netminder Cole Kehler faced 72 shots. The first place Islanders defeated the Winkler Royals 8-4 and improved to 13-0.


Pierre-Luc Dubois and Blake Wheeler scored second period goals and Connor Hellebuyck made 20 saves as Winnipeg shaded the Arizona Coyotes 2-1 at Canada Life Centre. The Jets (29-14-1) have won eight of their last nine games and begin a five-game road trip Tuesday when they face the Montreal Canadiens. 


Satsuki Fujisawa and Brendan Bottcher captured the Grand Slam of Curling’s Canadian Open Sunday in Camrose. Fujisawa beat Kerri Einarson 5-3 in the women’s final while Bottcher downed Niklas Edin 5-3 in the men’s final.

 

The Eastman Selects will play a pair of games against the Parkland Rangers in Dauphin this weekend. Head coach Dwight Hirst will join Clayton Dreger on the Selects Report which airs Mondays at 5:15 p.m. on AM 1250 Radio.
