Citizens on Patrol in Steinbach conducted a speed watch Monday afternoon on Old Tom Road to check on the speed of motorists. Coordinator Bernice McMullen says they were on location from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

"We surveyed 431 vehicles. 19 were over the speed limit and the speed limit there is 70 kilometres per hour. And the highest speed was 82."

McMullen notes their speed reader board also serves as a public education tool for many motorists.

"As soon as they see the sign they start slowing down. When they see what their speed is, you can certainly notice that, from when the board picks it up until they're right at the board, you can see that they've slowed down."

She says the results of the speed watch will be forwarded to Steinbach RCMP and to Manitoba Public Insurance.
