Despite having very little snow here in the Southeast, the snowmobiling season has begun. Riders are now being reminded of the rules.

Steinbach RCMP Constable Dennis Redekop says snowmobiles fall under the Off-Road Vehicle Act and as such, can only be driven on roadways in very limited circumstances.

"You have to have a license to cross roadways. You are allowed to ride a snowmobile under 14 only if you have direct supervision of a parent or guardian who is over 18. Snowmobiles have to be registered if you are riding in ditches and you can't ride across a median or a divided highway so I know there are some tracks but under the Off-Road Vehicle Act, you are not allowed to ride on medians."

According to the City of Steinbach's bylaws, Snowmobiles may be operated within the city between 7 A.M. and 11 P.M. on any street for the purpose of taking the most direct route in and out of the city to and from the rider’s place of residence. In addition, the speed limit for snowmobiles driving in and out of Steinbach is 20km/h.

Of course, Redekop notes snowmobiles are allowed on designated trails as long as they are open and you have the necessary snow-pass. He adds it is also important that riders take the necessary safety precautions.

"The most important thing is wearing helmets, it is a big safety aspect. Snow machines are big fun machines but they are more dangerous if you are not wearing any safety equipment so helmets are a huge must when riding a snowmobile."

With all that said, Redekop encourages riders to enjoy the season.

"Load them up on a trailer, go find ditches, along the highway is great too. I have seen a lot of people having fun. As long as you are riding safe and wearing all the safety equipment and everything registered and you have a valid license, go have fun."
