Shevchenko School in Vita

A well known face in the hallways at Shevchenko School in Vita won't be seen next school year, Vice Principal Brian Smook is retiring at the end of the month after a long career in the community. Smook says working with great groups of students of the years has been very rewarding. He reflects on his first day on the job.

"I walked in, I was very excited, I was ready for a challenge. I looked forward to working with a great group of people and more so students."

When asked what will be running through his mind during the upcoming graduation ceremony, the last one Smook with participate in as Vice Principal, he replied by saying there will be a part of him that will miss the school and the students. He adds however he is looking forward to the program and will be the Master of Ceremonies for the graduation dinner.

During his time at Shevchenko Smook was also a big part of the school's track program.

"I've coached track for a number of years and we've had a lot of great talented young students come through the system and we're very proud of all of them."

He was asked if the last track meet of the season was any different this time around, knowing he wouldn't be back next year.

"No, not really.  There's another teacher that will be taking over for me, along with two other teachers.  I believe our program will be in good hands in the future, they'll do a great job."

Meanwhile, Smook explains it wasn't only the students that were a pleasure to work with over the years.

"Our parents are very good and for the most part they send their students here everyday to be engaged and to take the time to learn new things and to move forward into the future to become better citizens in society."

When asked how he will fill his time after retirement, Smook said you'll most likely find him on the golf course.
