Street construction season in Steinbach will be less disruptive for motorists this year than it has been in recent years. As we told you Monday, one block of McKenzie Avenue from Highway #12 to Lilac Bay is out of commission for the next two months for reconstruction. Head Engineer Phil Kalyta says the only other street project is the repaving of Hespeler Street from Loewen Boulevard to Tower Avenue.

"The contract is anticipating that work will commence in late May or early June. Right now, it depends on the start-up of their asphalt plant. The construction work in Winnipeg is a little delayed so they haven't fired up their asphalt plant yet. They don't want to start the project (here) until they are sure they can cover it up with asphalt. That work will probably be cleaned up by mid-June so we should have a pretty quick capital works construction year this year."

Meanwhile, Kalyta says the only other construction projects this year involve new sidewalks along Lyndhurst Gate and Brighton Lane as well as along Parkhill Boulevard. He adds excavation will start next Monday, May 14 on Lyndhurst and Brighton and the following week on Parkhill. Kalyta says the Parkhill sidewalk will be almost one kilometre long.

"The Parkhill project stretches right from McKenzie and links up with the pathway by L.A. Barkman Park (Abe's Hill) so it'll be quite a

The city's main capital works project this year is the new $11 million water plant being built at the corner of Park and Bush Farm roads. It will be completed around next February.
