A severe thunderstorm watch is now in effect for many parts of southern Manitoba, including Steinbach.

Environment Canada says conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing large hail.

As of Wednesday at 4:20 pm, Environment Canada says thunderstorms have developed over portions of southwestern Manitoba which will continue to track east towards the Red River Valley this evening.

The main threat associated with these thunderstorms is large hail, however, an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

Environment Canada says large hail can damage property and cause injury.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, and torrential rainfall.

Environment Canada urges residents to be prepared for severe weather and to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
