Firefighters battle a truck blaze on Hwy #1 near McMunn

There was quite a spectacle Thursday morning on the Trans Canada Highway west of Falcon Lake. RCMP Corporal Miles Hiebert says the driver and co-driver of a westbound semi became aware of a mechanical malfunction. The truck then burst into flames.

"They were able to pull of the highway and both the driver and co-driver escaped without injury," says Hiebert. "However, it appears at this point that the truck and contents will be a complete loss." He notes the 2012 International tractor and trailer was hauling general freight. "There were no hazardous materials on board."

Hiebert says thankfully they didn't have to close the Trans Canada Highway during the ordeal. "Because they did have the presence of mind to pull off the highway we were able to keep travel traffic moving," he says.

The occupants, a 35 year old male and a 33 year old male were both from Ontario.

McMunn is located about 90 kilometres east of Steinbach on the Trans Canada Highway.
