This load has netting which keeps materials in place

One month has passed since the City of Steinbach began cracking down on people who are hauling unsecured loads to the landfill site.  Solid Waste Department Head Eldon Wallman says as of July 1, anyone arriving at the landfill without proper straps or tarp gets a $10 surcharge.  He recalls before they started the campaign they thought there would be a little more opposition to it but they are only getting about one person per week that hasn't heard about it or doesn't understand the reason behind it.  Wallman notes people have been great at understanding the safety and security reasons behind why the city is doing this.

He adds they are still issuing the $10 surcharge but landfill staff also give out a tarp and 4 bungee cords to the person, which is a good deal for someone.  It's kind of a win-win situation, you have to pay the surcharge but you get something good in return that you can tarp your load with.

Meanwhile Wallman reports this initiative has been well received by the public.  In fact residents who have been making regular trips out to the landfill have been commenting that roads and ditches are cleaner than they were prior to implementing the secure load program.
