Steinbach Credit Union wants to develop a paved parking facility on five lots that it previously purchased along the south of side of Reimer Avenue at Elmdale Street. It says it really needs the additional parking. SCU has applied to the city for the required Conditional Use Permit. In the application it noted there may be potential for the city to use the parking lot for events like hockey games. Councillors had some questions for the applicant but there were no SCU representatives in attendance at the public hearing Tuesday. Deputy Mayor Cari Penner says they then adjourned the hearing and will re-open it at the next council meeting.

"Council felt they needed to have some questions answered if that parking lot would be available for city use, for instance for hockey games or other events downtown and would that be open to the public as well. There was no one here to answer that today and we're hoping that we can have those questions answered before we look at our decision."

Councillor Michael Zwaagstra says council is keen to find out more about the suggestion the parking lot could be shared with the city.

"We wanted to know for example the extent to which this parking lot would benefit the public. Their application indicated that they were open to that but we need to get more information and to confirm that."

The public hearing will resume at the March 20th city council meeting.

The proposed parking lot would have stalls for about 96 vehicles.
