The Lorette Scorpions and Niverville Panthers will represent Zone 13 at the Provincial A-AA-AAA High School Soccer Championships this weekend in Minnedosa.

The Scorpions defeated Gabrielle Roy 4-2 in the girls zone final last Tuesday in Niverville.

“The girls were very excited” said Lorette coach Nicole Marr. “Some of my grade 12 girls got very emotional knowing it was our last game that they were playing for our zone but I think a lot of the tears of joy came just from knowing that we were going to go on to our provincials in Minnedosa.”

The Scorpions won the Provincial Rural High School Soccer championships in 2002 and 2015.

Lorette is seeded fourth in Minnedosa and will face the host Chancellors in the quarterfinals Friday morning.

The top three seeds are Zone 4 teams.

The Morden Thunder are number one followed by Northlands Parkway Collegiate of Winkler and the Miller Aces of Altona.

“There’s a lot of good teams,” said Marr. “We saw a few of them out at a tournament in Winkler so we know there’s a lot of skill and we expect to have to really fight for it.”

Niverville captured the Zone 13 championship banner thanks to a 5-1 victory over Gabrielle Roy in the boys final.

“I think scoring early really helped us and got our confidence going,” said Panthers coach Dwayne Penner. “We lagged a little bit in the middle but our boys really started to compete and win the battles and started to move the ball with nice simple passes so it was good,”

The Panthers, who captured their lone Provincial Rural High School Soccer championship banner in 2008, are seeded number two behind Morden and will face the host Chancellors in the quarterfinals Friday morning.

“Its going to be tough for sure,” said Penner. “There’s a lot of really good competition at the provincials. The key is just like when we won our zone – winning those battles, each person doing their own job and making the smart passes when it’s there and not trying to do too much.”
