For the second time in three years the Steinbach Regional Secondary School brought home the championship banner from the Provincial AAAA Junior Varsity Boys Volleyball Championship.

The Sabres defeated the Westgate Wings 17-25, 25-16, 25-18, 14-25, 15-9 Monday night at the Investors Group Athletic Centre on the University of Manitoba campus in Winnipeg.

"It's pretty sweet," said SRSS coach Greg Loeppky shortly after the banner and medal presentations. "These guys totally deserve it. They worked their butts off all year. We only have eight guys on the roster. I asked our setter on the way to the city, I said, 'Have you played every point of every set of every match this whole season?' He quietly just said, 'Yes coach.' Our setter (Cedric Villegas) could have been an MVP absolutely. He's unnoticed. We've got the big hitter, Jordan Heppner but Nick Hamm, on any other team he's a star middle hitter. He put balls away for us. We're a team. We're not just one player. We play as a team. Our team chemistry and our resilience - I think that's why we pulled it out."

The Wings were relentless in the fourth set but the Sabres answered the bell using an unstoppable middle attack to take control of the deciding fifth set.

"We needed to get the lead in the fifth." said SRSS captain Cole Giesbrecht. "We did that and it took off from there. We passed the ball, put it where we needed it and it all worked out."

Steinbach Regional and Westgate met six times this volleyball season including the provincial final on Monday.

The Sabres won every match.

SRSS left side hitter Jyro Friesen and libero Jan Paul Mutuc were named to the All-Star team.

Middle hitter Jordan Heppner was chosen the MVP.

"It shouldn't just be me," Heppner said. "It should be the whole team because I'm a middle so I should give it to the passers too because you need a good pass to get a good hit. It means a lot to me though."
