The RM of La Broquerie passed a resolution creating a new department for Community Services.

The measure passed at last week's council meeting calls for the current Leisure Services department to re-structure itself and expand the scope of its activities.

Reeve Lewis Weiss“Our leisure services used to do a lot with volunteer services. And then a number of years ago, Council made the decision to hire a full-time leisure services person and it's worked well,” Reeve Lewis Weiss says about the existing department.

He goes on to say that the new department will include functions similar to the RM’s now-dormant Community Development Corporation which was tasked to focus on tourism and economic development, among other things.

According to Weiss, the council is still determining the qualifications for whoever will take charge of the department, but he has a fair idea of what to expect from that person.

“Somebody who can promote the community showing what kind of leisure we have available. We have schools here. We're close to Steinbach. Close to Winnipeg. There are jobs in the area. Just a very general promotion of the community, the RM, the town or the LUD itself.”

Asked about the province’s investment earlier this week in a Francophone child care centre in the RM, the Reeve expressed his appreciation.

“It’s always good when we have projects and there's assistance. We always do appreciate that, and we've had a lot in the past and I imagine there's always more in the future.”
