A resident of La Broquerie was rescued from a house fire early this morning.

Fire Chief Al Nadeau says his department responded to the alarm at 1:30 am. Crews arrived to find smoke billowing out of the windows of a two story side-by-side in the southwest corner of La Broquerie.

According to Nadeau, it took crews about an hour before they had the blaze under control.

"It started in the kitchen for sure," says Nadeau, noting the Office of the Fire Commissioner is investigating.

Nadeau says prior to crews arriving, a resident of the home was found passed out in the garage by a neighbour.

"Probably saved his life," says Nadeau. "I think he tried to put it out and then was overcome by smoke. So they pulled him out of the garage."

The man was taken to hospital, though Nadeau says he had no burns and was conscious when he left the scene.

As for the side-by-side, Nadeau says the home where the fire started will have to be "redone," but says the other home has only water damage. He notes his firefighters did an amazing job.

This fire is not far from the apartment blaze that killed a 66-year-old man from La Broquerie in February.
