Youth Recreational Hockey remains incredibly popular in Steinbach.

Cassandra Kornelsen from Steinbach Parks and Recreation says rec hockey is split into fall and winter programs. She notes when registration opened in fall, spots went so fast that they had to expand the program to meet demand. She adds when registration opened for the winter months Friday morning the response was very similar.

"Exciting like it was in the fall. We had a great response right at 8 A.M. I saw registrations start flowing in, popping up on the screen, it was super great. The two most popular categories are the 7-11 years, we have a Friday and a Saturday session for that and those ones are almost full. We have about half room left in our 12-16 on the Friday."

Youth Recreational Hockey will start on January 11, 2018 and each age group will get a minimum of eight ice sessions. Kornelsen says this rec hockey program makes the sport very accessible.

"Minor hockey and sports, in general, can get expensive but our goal is to have as many kids come out and enjoy the sport, the recreation, and just celebrate community. That is what we are about, getting people involved and we are able to offer it to them at a reasonable price so we are really excited about it."

Kornelsen says all of the feedback they have received from volunteers and participants of their fall program this year has been very positive. She says right now many people are focused on Christmas and the holidays but she expects registration for the winter months should be full early in the new year.
