The weather looks to be a mixed bag this May long weekend.

But, Janelle Gergely with Environment Canada says because of the drought conditions we have been experiencing, this forecast will hopefully not be too disappointing for too many people.

Gergely notes there is precipitation coming from the west. The southeastern corner of the province should see anywhere from 10 to 30 millimetres of rain this weekend. Most of that will fall on Saturday before things taper off in the evening. The lowest precipitation amounts in the region will probably be in the far southeast corner, gradually increasing as you get closer to Winnipeg.

Saturday's high is only 13 degrees, but by Sunday it should be a return to near normal temperatures. The high is 20 degrees under a cloudy sky. Gergely says there is a chance of thunderstorms Sunday evening. She notes Monday should have the best weather of the weekend, with a high of 24 degrees under a mainly sunny sky.

For those considering planting their garden this weekend, Gergely says it does not appear we will get any frost. The coolest overnight low will be Saturday when it drops to 6 degrees. That means any precipitation that falls Saturday, should be in the form of rain, which is unlike some parts of northern Manitoba that have seen snow this week. But, though it might be a frost-free long weekend, Gergely suggests keeping a close eye on the forecast over the next couple of weeks when overnight lows might creep closer to the freezing mark.

As for next week, Gergely says temperatures should be at or near average highs for this time of year. She notes daytime temperatures should hover between 20 and 24 degrees.
