The Steinbach Pistons moved into sole possession of first place in the MJHL on Saturday night after defeating the Dauphin Kings 6-2 at the TG Smith Centre.

Kyle Bettens got Steinbach on the board on a breakaway as he managed to squeak a shot through for this 8th of the year to make it 1-0. Evan Kaufman picked up the lone assist.

A Pistons power play expanded the lead when Zach Purcell took a beauty feed from Bettens and hammered home his 7th of the year to make it 2-0. Curtis Ireland also picked up an assist on the goal.

Steinbach relied on their goalie Matt Lenz to make some huge saves as Lenz turned away a number of good scoring chances including one breakaway and then a great chance tight in front on a Kings power play but the period ended 2-0 Steinbach.

In the middle frame, Purcell struck again as he went to the front of the net and tipped home his second of the night off a beautiful point shot from Kaufman who notched his second assist of the game. Codey Behun also collected a helper.

After coming close for a number of games since coming to the Pistons, Bryce Young scored after forcing a turnover at the blue line, then slipping a shot through the 5-hole for his first goal of the year. The unassisted marker pushed the lead to 4-0.

Lenz again made a couple key saves as Dauphin pushed but Lenz and company brought the 4-0 lead into the second intermission.

In the third, the Kings finally broke through just as a 5 on 3 was ending, a shot beat Lenz to cut the lead to 4-1.

It was answered quickly by Behun who snapped off a beauty shot that went off the post and in for his team leading 11th with Bettens picking up yet another point. Making it a 5-1 game.

Bettens capped off a very strong night with his second goal of the game and 9th of the year on a breakaway again to push the lead to 6-1.

Dauphin scored on another power play late in the game to make it 6-2 but the Pistons wouldn't allow them to get any closer as the game finished by that score.

Lenz collected his league leading 14th win making 22 saves.

The power play was 1 for 2 while the penalty kill was 4-6.

Steinbach wraps up their home stand with a game vs the Waywayseecappo Wolverines on Sunday night.
